Mechanics Tools
While any good mechanic has had to use ingenuity from time to time to get the job done, nothing beats having a quality set of tools. Without them, the job will take longer than it needs to and while some would argue that means a higher charge out rate to the customer, respected mechanics know quality, affordable service and a quick turnaround mean everything for return business.
How to buy quality mechanics tools
Start by asking other mechanics what tools and brands they recommend. Experienced mechanics will have seen a lot of gimmicks and tried a lot of brands. Their advice is priceless before shelling out on your own set of tools.
Only buy your tools from authorised dealers. If you purchase from an unauthorised seller, you do not have a manufacturer's warranty. This means it can't be repaired or replaced - the warranty is void. You essentially have a set of second-hand tools with no warranty or guarantee.
A lot of the big name brands such as Supercraft, Snap-on Tools, Sidchrome include a lifetime guarantee against faulty workmanship which is an excellent selling point.
Don't forget tools insurance
Once you've bought your tool set, you have to take out some insurance for them. If someone breaks into your work van and steals your tools, you could be thousands of dollars out of pocket. Look for an insurance policy which includes a new for old replacement guarantee. A lot of insurance companies only pay you a depreciated value of the tools.
